Customs in plain language

Turkey and the EU have a customs union for industrial goods, which generally means no customs duty on qualifying textile products. You still have to declare the goods when they enter the EU and pay import VAT. Denmark's standard VAT rate is 25 percent, which a business can usually reclaim if it is VAT-registered.

Documents you will usually need

  • Commercial invoice: what is shipped, the quantity and the value.
  • Packing list: boxes, weights and contents.
  • Origin or movement certificate: where applicable, as your forwarder advises.
  • Product codes (HS codes): caps and hats usually fall under chapter 65, T-shirts under 6109, sweatshirts and hoodies under 6110, and socks under 6115. Bags vary, so let your forwarder confirm the code.

Who pays what: DAP or DDP

TermMeaning
DAP (delivered at place)The seller delivers to your door, and you handle import clearance, duties and VAT.
DDP (delivered duty paid)The seller handles everything, including import VAT, and you receive the goods without extra payments.

If you are VAT-registered, DAP is often fine because you can reclaim the VAT. If you want zero surprises, ask for DDP.

Questions to ask before you order

  1. Is the price DAP or DDP, and what exactly is included?
  2. Who is the carrier, and how long does it normally take to Denmark?
  3. Who handles customs clearance at the Danish end?
  4. What documents will you send, and when?
  5. What happens if the shipment is delayed or damaged?
  6. Can I track it end to end?

Packing and arrival

Ask for cartons that suit your storage, with clear labels showing the product and quantity per box. Check the count on arrival, and photograph any damage before signing so you can make a claim.
